Giving Back

Clarifying and redefining what we give and why can go far to enrich our lives and balance our budgets in very meaningful ways.

How is it that philanthropy has become seasonal and contingent? Sponsors of clothing and toy drives and food banks are ramping up their efforts to assist "those in need" now more than any other time of the year. Giving has been accepted as "doing right when things go wrong," after personal health crises, natural disasters, or war overseas. We make monetary, tax-deductible donations to our places of worship and favorite organizations. Millions are helped by these acts of kindness and compassion annually. Yet it begs the question, would we give as freely if we weren't prompted?

Consider:

  • Giving with a heart of gratitude instead of obligation or guilt. Think of times when you were helped by someone who was happy to be of service.
  • Changing the attitude of 'I'm happy because I'm getting' to 'I'm happy because I'm giving.'
  • Reading The Go-Giver - A Little Story About A Powerful Business Idea by Bob Burg and John David Mann.

How this can actually work:

  • Set up regular, automatic deductions
  • Participate in monthly or bi-monthly volunteer work. If you are a business owner, have your team join you.
  • Donate time and expertise through offering internship opportunities, partnering with schools, medical centers, animal clinics, etc.

Potential benefits:

  • Increases work-life balance, when properly planned
  • Releases funds for other holiday expenditures
  • Fosters unity and camaraderie within company departments
  • Increases the company's visibility in the community
